Chicago (April 11, 2011): Rain barrels. Wood refinishing. Do-it-yourself design. On Saturday, April 9th, thousands showed up to the 8th Historic Chicago Bungalow and Green Home Expo to learn how to preserve, renovate and green their home, while saving money. The information gleaned from the event is useful in today’s economy and the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association is sharing its notes.
“The point of the Expo is two-fold—we wanted to provide workshops that help attendees make economical and green choices in their home, and we also wanted to build a sense of community between the local businesses and homeowners,” said Mary Ellen Guest, Executive Director, Historic Chicago Bungalow Association.
One of the popular workshops, “Smart Plants, Smart Gardens”, led by Jackie Riffice of Prairie Godmothers, prepared attendees for spring landscaping. Riffice explained that being green is “not difficult, disruptive, uncomfortable or expensive. It is intentional and doing one thing—big or small—counts.” She recommended native plants and shrubs, as they are hearty, uncommon and healthy for the planet.
For those looking redesign or spruce up their home, Kelly Edwards of HGTV and the Style Network, suggested downsizing. Edwards added that simple accents, such as wallpapering a staircase or refurnishing old furniture would add spice to a room.
“Don’t worry about trends because they change,” said Edwards. “If you like it and you love it, it’s all yours.”
Reuse was a popular feature, showcasing local Chicago companies such as An Orange Moon, the self-proclaimed “hippest vintage furniture store” around, Horigan Urban Forest Products, Inc and Peter’s Wood Refinishing.
Exhibitors and workshops provided myriad tips for attendees, including:
The Expo proved that all that is shiny and new is not necessarily trendy, better for the planet or your bank account. For expert Do-it-Yourselfers, beginners or the eco-conscious, these tips can make a difference in your home.
