Some of the City’s most famous, influential and interesting residents have called Historic Chicago Bungalows home since their boom nearly a century ago. Nearly 20 years before he was first elected Mayor in 1955, Richard J Daley moved into a Chicago Bungalow in Bridgeport where he lived and raised his children until 1976. The original owner of one West Ridge Bungalow built in 1927 was Illinois State boxing commissioner Samuel Luzzo, a union kingpin who was charged with fixing a match featuring star boxer Jack Dempsey.
Stories of famous firsts, past homeowners of influence or fame, neighborhood change or history, and memories of growing up in the famed Bungalow Belt – these are some of the stories the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association hopes to highlight this fall with their new book: “Tales from the Bungalow Belt.”
Stories can be sent to the HCBA in a number of ways. Homeowners are encouraged to include 2-3 original photographs when submitting their story. Please include your name, address and contact information. The deadline for stories is Monday, October 6th. Stories and photos can be sent electronically by emailing bungalow@chicagobungalow.org. If photographs are submitted electronically, please send high resolution (1MB or larger) JPEG files. Nominations and photos can also be mailed to:
The Historic Chicago Bungalow Association Attn: Tales from the Bungalow Belt 1 N. LaSalle St. 12th Floor Chicago, Illinois 60602
The special book and best stories will be presented at the 4th Annual Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Bungalow Awards, to be held on Monday, November 10th at the Harold Washington Library, marking an expansion of the event from past years. Famous Chicagoans – from authors to Aldermen – will be on-hand to celebrate Bungalow preservation.
