What is a Chicago Bungalow?

Associated with the philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement, "bungalow" has become a generic term to describe a house or cottage. Built between 1910 and 1940 to meet Chicago's rapidly growing population – including immigrants and families flocking to the city's many new manufacturing and industry professions – the Chicago Bungalow has been the foundation of families and neighborhoods for nearly a century.

Chicago Bungalows feature sturdy brick construction, a roofline perpendicular to the street, one and one-half stories, detailed windows and stone work, sheltered entrances and well-kempt lawns.  With more than 80,000 Bungalows, the housing style represents nearly one-third of the city’s single-family housing stock.

Decorative elements adorn most bungalows, including stone planters, brackets and accents, exterior wood moldings and trim, which add great architectural interest and distinction to the homes.

Although adaptable, it is imperative that owners of Historic Chicago Bungalows maintain their homes' original character by following the HCBA's Design Guidelines – a series of tips dedicated to preserving the past while preparing for the future.

It is the original architectural detailing and streetscape elements that set Bungalows apart from other homes and collectively make up the unique character of Chicago's Bungalow Belt.
