Project Description

Josephine Crosse turned her plain bungalow lawn into her dream garden. The soil was infested with harmful ants, so she worked by herself to replace all the soil one section at a time instead of using pesticides. She graded all the land away from the foundation and built a rain trench with deep-rooted plants along her garage to capture rainwater. Then she planted a diverse and colorful variety of perennials and native plants to endure Chicago weather and appeal to butterflies, bees, birds, and humans alike. The decorative elements and garden borders are composed of repurposed concrete and tree stumps from the neighborhood. When each foster dog Josephine cares for inevitably digs a hole in the yard, she plants something there to commemorate them, creating a garden with a lot of heart.
