A large amount of Kristen Pratt’s block is taken up by parking lots and factories, so permeable surfaces and green spaces are lacking. This leads to issues with surface and basement flooding for her and her neighbors. Over the past three years, Kristen has cut out all of the turfgrass in her front lawn and replaced it with deep-rooted native landscaping, allowing for better infiltration of stormwater. She also replanted the parkway in front of her house with plants that would've been found prevalently in the area 100 years ago. Kristen even hosted a how-to workshop for her neighbors, using her property as an example, in hopes that if enough neighbors replace portions of their lawns with deep-rooted natives, there will be fewer problems with flooding.
