Project Description

Phillip Williams wanted to restore his bungalow’s woodwork to its original beauty, which meant stripping the several layers of paint that had accumulated with previous owners. Knowing he wanted to complete the job himself but unsure how to best remove the paint, Phillip attended HCBA’s seminar “Don’t Trash That Sash!” where Julie Liska of Liska Architects discussed restoring and repairing original windows and hardware. Phillip applied the methods of restoring wood windows to the rest of his home’s woodwork. Starting in the kitchen—and taking necessary precautions to prevent possible lead exposure—he used a heat gun and solvent paint stripper to strip the cabinets, windows, doors, and trim. After varnishing with polyurethane to bring out the natural color, the result is historic woodwork given new life by one dedicated homeowner.
