What sets your garden apart from the rest? "Our colorful window boxes highlight our 100+ year old bungalow blossoming often from early June well into Fall. Each year we enjoy varying the plants and flowers in the window boxes, watching as they cascading over the sides or stretching up to the sun. They seem to smile at passersby who slow briefly as they walk their dogs, point them out to their little ones in their strollers or simply slow for a few seconds as they jog on by., and they smile back."

What sets your garden apart from the rest? "This is a hard question to answer because every window box I see is a unique creation with its own beauty. I made my window box three years ago and a simple design that is in harmony with the house."

"We built our 12 foot long cedar flowerbox specifically for our bungalow, then added: two foliage thrillers — caladiums and coleus — for bold color that holds up between blooms, impatiens to provide continuous color, and sweet potato vine and vinca spilling generously over the edges. Our flowerbox faces 99th Street where neighbors pass by on their way to school or the Metra. It's been a small, happy way to feel like part of the neighborhood."

What sets your garden apart from the rest? "We tried to make our window boxes more sustainable this year by incorporating a few perennials. This fall we'll plant the perennials in a holding bed and divide them for next year's boxes. We'll also try to overwinter the caladium and rex begonia tubers. We selected a layered mix of ferns, caladiums, rex begonias, heucheras, and flowering begonias to create texture, depth, and seasonal color."

"After buying our first home, this bungalow, and researching the architect’s intent for garden boxes to have the homes become one with nature, I knew I wanted to have a garden box, a big one. My husband built this for me about 2 years ago and we have so much fun with it all year around. We even decorate it for Christmas."

What sets your garden apart from the rest? "My front window box is custom made by my late husband. It is 9' long and rests on the existing corbels. Designing this box is a challenge because the lighting conditions vary from one end to the other and I have flesh eating squirrels that root through them no matter what I do! My best solution has been to go foliage forward for vigor and lighting tolerance."

"Many window boxes go all in on flowers, but mine goes the other way, built mostly from succulents in every shape and shade, from pale green rosettes to deep burgundy aeoniums, with a little coleus tucked in for a spark of contrast. The result is a box you read for texture, not just color, and it shifts character in every light from morning to dusk. Set against the brick, it is less a seasonal display than a small experiment in how much life you can layer into a few feet of soil."

What sets your garden apart from the rest? "I love having variety of plants in our window box -- different colors, shapes, sizes, heights, drapes, types and textures. I think the pinks and purples look great against the bright greens, I love that most of the color comes from leaves and not just flowers, and I also enjoy the symmetry of the plants in the box. This is my first year submitting, and I also enjoyed putting some plants in that I've grown for years (one I've had over a decade!) alongside new annuals."
