Chris and Rosaileen wanted to turn their small, plain backyard into a tropical-themed oasis that is also environmentally friendly. Doing the work themselves, they built a pergola and a patio of permeable pavers that allows rain to drain through, reducing their risk of basement flooding. They also installed a patch of artificial turf to save water beneath the kiddie pool that their young kids love to play in.
