Auriel Abdullah Choudhry, South Chicago
I am a new gardener that decided to start with 2- 8x2 raised beds in my 90% raised garden beds. There has been no real expertise, just time, freedom of experimenting, and pure joy.

My garden was created by trial and error. I’m new to growing my vegetables and learning the joy of my space. Who knew that you could grow watermen’s and strawberries in the inner city!

Our vegetable garden is a lab, where each year we try various permaculture techniques. We tend lovingly to all the things that use it as their living room: bees, bugs, birds, worms, flowers, berries, moss, sedum, fruits and vegetable. We compost or recycle everything: branches into a retaining wall for the berm, scraps into soil, vine and grass into woven baskets and borders, rainwater into food. Everything that grows there stays there and the micro-climate that we have created makes our two “hugels” or permaculture berms feel like a paradise for all creatures. Even if we need to share the berries and tomatoes with the birds and squirrels or occasional skunk, it is okay with us as long as they leave us a few.

Es un jardín que tiene flores, tomates y chiles. Un poco de todo. Me gusta cuando todo florea y se mira hermoso. (It's a garden with flowers, tomatoes and chilies. A little bit of everything. I like it when everything is in bloom and looks beautiful.)

Because we still want to have space for our kids to play, we have to utilize containers and vertical space to grow things. This year, we moved a big portion of our garden to the front yard where we have peas, beans, cucumbers, and herbs growing on an arch from raised beds. Our potatoes and broccoli are grown in pots so we can easily move them to have more space for play, or to accommodate the plants' needs.
